Each of our skin tag clients at the Sutton-in-Ashfield Wart Removal Clinic will have their tag or tags clinically assessed by one of our nurses. Almost every tag is suitable to be removed. After assessment, your nurse will apply nitrous oxide to the area, which is very cold. The nurse, using a pen like precision tool, will apply nitrous oxide, also known as N20. The nitrous oxide essentially freezes the stalk of the skin tag which stops the flow of blood to the skin tag and effectively kills the tag.

The pen does not penetrate the skin, but the device application may feel like the nib of a ballpoint pen touching your skin. When the nurse is applying the nitrous oxide, they may decide to apply the tool more than once. This could be because of the size of the skin tag. While most tags can be treated and dealt with in one session, some tags might need a second follow up session.

After the nitrous oxide procedure, there may be a slight tingling sensation in the treatment area. While it is not painful, the treatment may leave you with a mild stinging feeling for the rest of the day.

After cryotherapy, the tag will change colour and grow darker. You will also feel it dry out and become crusty – this is a good sign which shows the treatment has worked. In a few days, the tag will just fall of altogether. You might see a little mark where the tag has detached from. This will vanish in time. Once healed, you will be able to return to your normal skincare routine.

Some people are more prone to skin tags than others, however it is not clear why this might be the case. You may opt to have more than one skin tag removed at a time. Skin tags may sometimes look like warts; however, they are neither contagious and they will not grow back once removed.

Our preferred option – and the most convenient for our clients – is to have skin tags removed via freezing. This process is known as cryotherapy. Skin tags can also be removed by cutting them off or burning them off, however at our clinic, we prefer to use cryotherapy.
